Best Holiday Drink: The Christmas Copper Mule.

For your consideration this holiday season: The Christmas Copper Mule. Look, no one can deny the crazy popularity of the Moscow Mule. The drink seems to be everywhere; in bars, our homes, recipe blogs, you name it. Heck, while I was doing my Christmas gift shopping this year, copper mule mugs were promoted as the perfect cocktail enthusiast gift. Luckily, my fiancé and I received a set of four as our first registry gift so I had to test them out - only for this time of year, I wanted to add my own seasonal twist.

At first, I thought of doing a cranberry mule, but when I visited my local Trader Joe’s, I decided to re-imagine my cocktail blueprints. On the juice display shelf at T.J.s, I noticed a bottle of Winter Wassail. Wassail (a hot muled cider drink) is one of those “old school” classic holiday cocktails my mom used to make on Christmas. She’d heat it in a crockpot with clove-pricked oranges and booze and ladle it into mugs fo all of her holiday guests. It smelled amazing and tasted great too (yes, I totally sneaked a sip). Anyway, the Wassail label brought up a bunch of memories, plus I knew it was already spiced, so it was the perfect match for my new drink idea: The Christmas Copper Mule.

Also, bourbon already has spiced undertones, so I decided to use it instead of the typical vodka element. I should mention that I found all of the ingredients for this drink at Trader Joe’s, including their Trader Joe’s Triple Ginger Brew. Besides the great holiday flavors in this drink, I gotta admit, the rosemary wreath was a last minute idea that just brought the whole drink together! FESTIVE, right? You can absolutely make this drink without the copper mugs, but they just add a bit glitz and they also help keep your drink colder, for longer.

Stay tuned for my super easy Trader Joe’s Crockpot Wassail, and I hope you get a chance to impress your holiday guests with one the best looking Christmas cocktails on the block. Don't forget to subscribe to my YouTube channel for more cocktail recipes!

(makes 1 cocktail)

Ingredients:

  • 1 ¾ oz bourbon
  • 2 oz Trader Joe’s Winter Wassail
  • ¾ oz fresh lime juice
  • 4 oz Trader Joe’s Triple Ginger Brew or ginger beer
  • ¼ oz simple syrup or honey
  • ice

  • Garnish:
  • lime wheel
  • rosemary spring
  • fresh pomegranate seeds
  • cinnamon stick
  • butchers twine or thread

    Directions:

Place bourbon, wassail, lime juice and honey or simple syrup in shaker tin. Cover shaker tin securely and shake until the exterior of the tin becomes frosty cold. Remove lid and strain liquid through the top strainer into a copper mule mug with fresh ice. Top with ginger beer (give a quick stir) and the *rosemary wreath garnish (I used some vintage coasters my mom gave me to avoid cocktail rings on the wood). Enjoy!

*How to make this adorable garnish and rosemary wreath:

Slice a lime wheel and set it aside. Take one sprig of rosemary and loop it to look like a wreath. Tie the two ends together with some thread or butchers twine. Next, use some more butchers twine and thread it through the tiny hole in the middle of the lime wheel and attach it to the rosemary wreath, making a twine bow. Poke a cinnamon stick through the center of the lime home and place it near the edge of the drink. Top lime wheel with fresh pomegranate seeds.
