The 4th of July just brings the patriotism out in me. Mind you I'm a very festive and celebratory kind of gal, but the waving flags, fireworks and all-around friendliness of everyone makes me feel a sense of community and appreciation on Independence Day. Combine all of those ingredients along with my holiday leftovers and you have the recipe for my latest culinary creation: The All-American Burger.
Let's celebrate the iconic burger by adding some classic American garnishes! I promise you, the flavors are explosive and satisfying. I used an all beef patty with only 9% fat content and my all time favorite cheddar cheese, Tillamook. I chose a simple sesame seed bun so the flavors of the other ingredients would really stand out. My new favorite technique with my onions is to soak them in red wine vinegar for about 10 minutes so it gives them a "quick-pickled" effect.
Summer is all about grilling and barbecuing, so prepare these All-American burgers for a real Labor Day success. If you don't want to make full burgers, then turn this dish into bite-size sliders for the perfect mouthful of food; just size down the toppings to fit the sliders and use tootpick to keep the ingredients in place. Feel like being a little bit naughty? Add some bacon slices to this burger, too! What type of drink or beer would you pair with this burger? Let me know in the comment box below.
1. Before cooking your patties, add sliced red onion rings in a small dish with red wine vinegar and let soak for about 10 minutes. After soaking, remove onions and drain. Next, toss halved romaine lettuce stalk with ranch dressing until evenly coated.
2. Season 4 all beef patties (I used pre-formed patties with only 9% fat) with seasoning salt and pepper. Spray patties with non-stick spray and place on pre-heated grill or grill pan (sprayed side down) for 4-5 minutes on each side. Spray other side of patty before flipping to the other side. About 1 minute before the second side is done, add pre-sliced Tillamook cheese. Lightly grill buns if preferred. 3. Remove patties from grill and place on buns. Stack lettuce, onions, pickles and heirloom tomatoes on each patty. Use ketchup and mustard as needed. Enjoy!
