B.B. King is considered the American "King of Blues," and he even took home a Grammy for his 1970 song, The Thrill is Gone. I mean, the man, the guitarist, singer and song writer is awe-inspiring, especially considering his life story thus far. So, what did B.B. King drink after a long night at the Blues club? Singing and playing all night was surely rewarding, but it must have been exhausting as well. Whisky, scotch, or beer perhaps?

Well, I'd like to imagine that if I was slinging drinks behind the bar of some Blues club, he'd enjoy my latest cocktail named after him: The B.B. King Cocktail. I happen to be a bit of a Blues fan and the ingredients in this particular cocktail fit the name as well, so it just made sense. You'll need some ripe blackberries, Bourbon, "blues"-berry preserves, fresh lemon juice, honey and some apple cider. If you haven't purchased a muddler yet, go ahead and use the back of a spoon the smash the blackberries in your shaker tin.

Here's what I suggest. Turn on some blues music when you are about to make this delicious drink. Get in the mood for making a sexy craft cocktail and have fun while you are doing it - that's how I roll! Want to impress a certain somebody in your life with your new mixology skills? This is the one, ladies and gentlemen. Another note, I recommend using fresh-squeezed lemon juice if you can. To B.B. King (aka Riley B.) and all of you craft cocktail fans out there, the thrill is not gone is this one…

(makes 1 cocktail)

Ingredients:

  • 2 ripe blackberries
  • 1 & 3/4 oz Bourbon Whisky
  • 3/4 oz of lemon juice
  • 1/2 oz blueberry preserves
  • 1/4 oz honey
  • 4 oz apple cider
  • ice

    Directions:

Muddle 2 ripe blackberries is a shaker tin. Add Bourbon, fresh lemon juice, blueberry preserves and honey to the shaker tin with some ice. Shake for about 15 seconds or until tin is frosty cold. Strain mixture through a cocktail or home strainer (to filter blackberry seeds) over a glass of fresh ice. If the mixture gets stuck, use a spoon to move the seeds around and open up the flow. Rinse shaker tin. Add 4 oz of apple cider (or until the glass becomes full) to the glass of ice. Next, either stir the cocktail with a long spoon to mix the ingredients evenly or pour the cocktail back into the shaker tin and then back into the glass (just as effective). Garnish with a blackberry and rosemary sprig. Enjoy!
