JACK-O-Lantern Mule – A Halloween Inspired Moscow Mule with Jack Daniels Whiskey.

JACK-O-Lantern Mule Cocktail by Maren Swanson. #Halloween #cocktail #MoscowMule

I know this Halloween cocktail recipe is kind of late in the making, but I can’t help when inspiration strikes me! Halloween is 2 days away, and if you’re looking for a last minute cocktail recipe to impress your guests or loved ones, then you just hit the jackpot! I was decorating our place the other day for our annual Halloween party (we live on the corner of the world’s biggest Halloween bash in West Hollywood) and planning our menu, when I came across the idea of my new Halloween party hit: the JACK-O-Lantern Mule!

That’s right, it’s a Moscow Mule, but made with Jack Daniel’s Whiskey and served in copper Moscow Mule mug that looks like a Jack-O-Lantern. See what I’m getting at…this drink is crazy fun!

Of course, once I got excited about the drink idea, I got just as excited about the garnishes. Remember those plastic Jack-O-Lantern pails we would carry around and collect candy in? Well, I had to include that idea somehow in my drink, so I used the hollowed out lime halves that I juiced for this recipe and added candy corn – thanks to my sister Brittany for the candy corn idea! And because I couldn’t stop there, I added a cinnamon stick that you could smell as you drank this cocktail and some cinnamon-sugared candied thyme to take things up a notch.

To make the cinnamon-sugared candied thyme, simply rinse the top inches of a few sprigs of thyme in the lime juice and then shake off the excess juice. Give the thyme a quick pat with a paper towel (but still keep the thyme damp) and then cover the thyme with a cinnamon-sugar combination on a plate until most of the top part is covered - it's actually edible! It isn’t necessary to use all of these garnishes, but I wanted to give you lots of options, plus the more treats the better. ☺

There are a few ways to create the Jack-O-Lantern looking copper mule mug. I had extra black foam board laying around, so I cut out some triangles and a spooky mouth and used some crafting glue to stick it on the outside of the mug. You can also order these online (I saw one store online somewhere that carried them) or could use a black permanent marker to draw on the shapes as well.

With a typical Moscow Mule recipe, you could just layer the ingredients and stir them, but I prefer giving the first few ingredients a shake with this version so the spices and cinnamon simple syrup combine really well. I hope you get a chance to make my JACK-O-Lantern Mule for yourself of costumed friends this Halloween, and let me know how it turns out. Happy Halloween!
