Hi there! I hope you are having a fantastic weekend filled with fun activities, fantastic food and libations. Speaking of libations, I just created a cool-down summer cocktail that’s worthy of sharing with all my boozy enthusiasts out there.

Even though we Los Angelinos survived an intense heat wave last week, I’m prepping new drink recipes to whip up while I’m melting in August and September. I decided to use vodka because we have so much left over from our wedding, and Aperol happens to be one of my favorite new spirits, so I combined it with the vodka and some fresh fruit elements to create tasty at-home happy hour cocktail: Punch Drunk Clove.

What makes the flavor of this drink extra special is the clove simple syrup I made and added to it. The subtle spice rounds out the citrus notes in the drink and makes it extra delicious.

Fresh muddled raspberries give this grapefruit punch the prettiest shade of pink color. Place some edible and vibrant flowers on your drink and your guests will go wild! What are you waiting for? You owe yourself a refreshing cold drink, so get shaking and let me know what you think.

Ingredients:

  • 3 raspberries
  • 1 oz vodka
  • 1 ¼ oz Aperol
  • 3 ½ oz ruby red grapefruit juice
  • *3/4 oz clove simple syrup (cloves, sugar, water - see below)
  • ice

  • Garnish:
  • fresh mint
  • raspberry
  • rolled up grapefruit twists
  • edible flowers (optional)

  • *Clove simple syrup:

Clove simple syrup: Bring a ½ cup of water, 6 cloves, and a ½ cup of sugar to a boil and stir until sugar dissolves. Remove from heat. Refrigerate for up to a week in an airtight container (I leave 3 cloves inside to intensify the clove flavor overnight).

    Directions:

Muddle raspberries in a cocktail shaker, then add vodka, Aperol, grapefruit juice, clove simple syrup and ice. Secure shaker top and shake until tin turns frosty cold. Strain cocktail into a glass with fresh ice. I rolled up grapfruit peels to mimick a flower shape and then poked through it witha bamboo toothpick to hold it in place. I added a sprig of fresh mint and a raspberry to the tootpick, along with some edible flowers in the drink to finish it off.
