Fall may be reluctant to change the Los Angeles weather so far, but regardless, you will start to notice bars and restaurants city-wide rolling out seasonal menus. Fuller-bodied libations and red meat treats tend to be some of the fare descriptions that grace these new menu inserts and I have no complaints. I definitely appreciate seasonal menus even more in L.A. because our seasons aren't extremely difinitive.
With Faith and Flower's inclusion in Esquire Magazine's Best New Restaurants in America, the Downtown Los Angeles restaurant's popularity continues to grow. Michael Lay, the resident mixologist, has practically become famous for his English Milk Punch cocktail and now he has developed a list of Fall cocktails that are equally divine. I had the opportunity to try some Michael's new cocktails the other night and noticed that his menu was divided into three sections: (1) Highballs, (2) Stirred, Spiritous and Provocative and (3) Shaken, Citrus Refreshing. Here's a peek at some of the other drinks I tried and don't worry…the English Milk Punch in still on the menu.
Shaken, Citrus and Refreshing
Pio Pico: El Silencio Mezcal, Arette Blanco, Carmelized Pineapple, Lime, Ginger, Serrano. The Pio Pico was a well-blended surprise of smokiness and spice. Served over rocks, I would suggest this Serrano cocktail on a first date to really get the night going. Just be careful not to rub your eyes if you handle the pepper!
*Cameron's Kick: Craddock, Hotel Savoy 1930 Jameson Black Barrel, Monkey Shoulder Scotch, Amantillado Sherry, Lemon, Small Hand Foods Orgeat
Highballs
*Berry Gin & Tonic: Martin Miller's Westbourne Gin Infused with Berries, Bergamot, Small Hand Foods Tonic - served carbonated and on draught.
Stirred, Spiritous and Provocative
Witch of Wilshire: Jenson Old Gin, Strega, Geijer Glogg, Bittermens Tiki Bitters. Not for the faint of heart. The server warned us this drink had a little kick and he was right on the money. I did a little Strega shake at first sip.
*Dundorado: (Apologies to Kappeler - Modern American Drinks 1895) Arette Blanco Tequila, Calisaya, Imbu Petal & Thorn Apertif, Bettermens Burlesque Bitters
