Bigfoot Lodge - Happy Hour

by Rachel Forman

Dear Love,

I got a sunburn on Christmas.  That’s because Christmas this year was 79 and sunny.  This is awesome for obvious reasons, but it’s also a nuisance.  After living in Los Angeles my entire life, I’ve learned that no one’s going to give me a winter; I’ve got to make one for myself.

Which brings me to Big Foot Lodge, dubbed by the bar’s creators a “log cabin drinkery.”  Come on, it doesn’t get more wintry than that.  Maybe the place wasn’t as exciting to my cohorts Charlie and Nikos, who have both experienced real life winters, but I was thrilled to find this cozy cabin just minutes from my house.  We popped over for the daily happy hour, 5-8 PM.  I’m blaming the emptiness of my wooden winter wonderland on the fact that we got there much closer to the 5 PM side.  Every bar takes a while to heat up, just like a wood-burning stove.  That’s a thing, right?

Their $5 HH menu caters to a wide variety of patrons.  The Rude Bear Float (an alcoholic root beer float) for the kid at heart, Newcastle (draft) for the self-fancied beer sommelier, Jameson (shot, neat, rocks, or with a mixer) for the burly strongman, and Absolut Vodka (with your choice of a juice or bubbly mixer) for the chick that probably got dragged there with the boys, like me.  Well I defy you, stereotypes I just made up!  Because Charlie and I got Jameson Whiskies, while Nikos opted for the Newcastle.

I was looking for a makeshift LA winter, so the vibe was pretty perfect.  Tabletops made out of tree stumps, wall-mounted deer heads, Smokey the Bear in a Santa suit… Their chalkboard menu even boasted Moonshine.  I don’t know what the 1930s version of the word “baller” is, but having Moonshine on your menu is definitely that.

Big Foot Lodge was a quirky, cozy place to catch up with the boys.  The bartender was engaging, the vibe was right, and the drinks hit the spot.  Not an ounce of condescension in this place, but also not the happy hour you’d primp for to hit up with your girlfriends.  Go here if you want to get out of LA but you can’t afford the gas.  I’m talking to you, Lumberjacks. And Lumberjills too.

xo,
Forman
