10 Tips to Save Money and Spend Less in 2015 from LoveHappyHour.com

Basically, the holidays kicked my ass this year, and now I have the post shopping blues. I have no one to blame but myself, oh but wait, add the hundreds of retailers, advertisers and emails calling my name to shop to the list. I call in the "naughty list," and I am ready to redeem myself for 2015. It's time to pay off all of my credit cards, save for my trip to Italy and stop shopping so much. Of course I can't stop shopping all together, duh, but I can sure try to change my spending habits. Shiny and new is very appealing, but the more we collect, the more we forget how much stuff we already have. It's time to curb the shopping impulses, use what I've already got and save a whole lot of money. Here are some New Year's spending and saving resolutions I've collected to help kick my shopping habits into shape. Sharing is caring, so please use this guide if you need some financial tips as well!

1. Happy Hour

Well, of course I have to mention happy hour - it's the reason I started this web site in the first place: to save money! Sure, eating out at fine dining establishments is amazing, too, but it can add up. Happy hour is a great way to save a few bucks or even get lower than half price prices at your favorite eating joints. What's even better is, most of my favorite neighborhood spots have started serving up happy hour anyway and some will even offer it all night or late night, too. So save some money and get your grub on at the same time. Not a bad deal, right? Use LoveHappyHour.com to get searching for happy hours in your hood.

2. Coupons

I remember growing up an watching my dad's girlfriend cut coupons from the Sunday paper. I used to knock it, but coupons can really save you some serious pocket change. In addition to the Sunday paper, I get weekly mailers from stores like Gelson's, that offers a $5 coupon with a $25 in store purchase. You can also print coupons online straight from the manufacturer or find promo codes online with websites like Retail Me Not or Coupons.com. I have probably saved $100 by just searching specific retailers on Retailmenot.com and they don't even make you subscribe to them.

3. Eliminate Email Subscriptions

I can't tell you how distracting it has become to check my daily emails and be lured in by a "deal" waiting in my in box for me. Impulsive purchases are exciting and retailers know this, that's why it's extremely common for big online shops to use trigger words to get you pressing that purchase button. Do any of these phrases sound familiar: "one day only," "limited quantities available," "save on everything in this email," "we've picked these deals just for you," or "starts now: site wide clearance!"? Yes, sales can be good, but if you take advantage of all of these sales, you will end up broke. Sure, that $5 magazine subscription is tempting, but do I really need another magazine subscription? Deal emails can become a rabbit hole of shopping and it can really hurt your wallet. So, what's the best solution? Unsubscribe. Yes, it may be a little painful to let go of Living Social, but you will thank me at the end of the year when you realize how much superfluous stuff you didn't buy.

4. Cooking

If you not a cooking enthusiast, then the idea of making your own food can be a slog. Baby steps. Have you been following a food blog you love? Find some of your favorite recipes and try making them! Start with the easiest ones and work your way up and who knows, you may just end up loving it. Plus, you'll have leftovers for more meals. Think about it. Say one recipe makes four servings for you and you spend $15-20 on average per meal. Four meals could save you up to $100!

5. Comparison Shop

Those 500 thread count sheets may seem like a real steel for $50, but did you know that could run up to 25% less on a competitor's website? Don't hit that purchase button until you've done you shopping due diligence. Copy and paste the brand name product and description in your Google search bar to find competitive prices on the same product all over the web. That extra 5 minute search for a better deal could save you bookoo bucks.
