True Blood: Cocktails and Bites for your Season 7 Premiere Party

All year we’ve awaited the comeback of Lafayette’s witty remarks, we’ve been fantasizing about Jason Stackhouse, Eric Northman, and Alcide Herveaux, and we’ve also been wondering what the hell Sookie will get herself into this time. Well, the wait is over! The final season of HBO’s True Blood premieres Sunday, June 22nd at 9 p.m. This is what we’ve all been waiting for- the grand finale. The distressing realization that we are nearing the end of an amazing television series was quickly followed by the remarkable idea that this calls for a season premiere party! During the past few days I have discovered cocktails and appetizers that will help transport you into the crazy town of Bon Temps, Louisiana once again.

Though there is a blood orange soda called Tru Blood on the market, it is near impossible to find (the only time I saw it was in a tiny gas station market off the I-15 on my way to Las Vegas). So, we just have to come up with our own versions, and then turn them into sinfully delicious cocktails. Drink responsibly! You don’t want to wake up feeling like you’re meeting your true death tomorrow.

A Shot of True Blood

Shot of True Blood: Cocktails and Bites for a True Blood Party
An absolute staple drink for any vampire-themed party is a shot of true blood. This one is super easy to throw together, and shouldn’t cost you too much money either. Sure, it's fake blood but us human party-goers think it tastes a whole lot better. Oh, and it's all about the presentation.

A Shot of True Blood

  • 1 oz citrus-flavored vodka
  • 1 oz blood orange soda
  • Splash Granadine
  • Ice
  • Directions:

Fill a shaker tin with vodka, grenadine and ice. Shake until cold. Strain into a shot glass. Top with cold blood orange soda.

    Faerie’s Nectar

Escape to the realm of the fays with this nectar.

    Faerie’s Nectar

    • 1 1/2 oz Belvedere Pink Grapefruit
    • 3 oz grapefruit juice
    • 5 oz fresh lemon juice
    • Tru Blood or any blood orange soda
    • Ice

    Directions:

Shake with ice and strain over cubed ice into a highball glass. Top with 3 oz of Tru Blood. Garnish with a slice of grapefruit.

    Vampire Kiss Martini

Tru Blood Cocktails: Vampire Kiss Martini
Vampires heat up their Tru Blood, but their kisses will heat up your night.

    Vampire Kiss Martini

    Directions:

Pour vodka in a martini glass. Top with Champagne and pour a little of the Chambord over the back of the spoon to make it float.

    Arlene’s Anti-Vampire Dip

Cocktails and Bites for a True Blood Party #TrueBlood
This recipe from The Kitchn is called Baked Ricotta with Lemon, Garlic and Chives but we think this dish would be a great undercover anti-vampire appetizer.

    Arlene’s Anti-Vampire Dip
  • 15 ounces (about 2 cups) whole milk ricotta
  • 1 large lemon, zested and juiced
  • 2 large cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 ounce fresh chives, minced (about 1/2 cup)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt, fresh ground pepper
  • Extra-virgin olive oil
  • Small crackers or slices of baguette, to serve
  • Directions:

Heat the oven to 375°F. Lightly grease a 1/2- to 1-quart gratin dish or baking pan. Mix the ricotta, lemon juice and zest, garlic, chives, and salt, and a generous quantity of fresh black pepper. Spread in the baking dish and drizzle with olive oil. (At this point you can cover and refrigerate the ricotta overnight, if desired.) Bake for 15 to 20 minutes or until hot. Drizzle again with olive oil. Serve immediately with crackers for dipping.

    Tara's Deviled Eggs

Cocktails and Bites for your True Blood Season 7 Premiere Party.

So here’s a throwback to season 1 and Tara Thornton’s ex-boyfriend, Eggs. Too bad he was unknowingly possessed and turned into a devilish character. This is our own recipe, so we're super proud of it.

    Tara's Deviled Eggs

  • 2 tablespoons of low-fat mayonnaise
  • 1 tablespoon of Trader Joe's Aoili Garlic Mustard
  • 1 teaspoon of rice wine vinegar or white vinager
  • Hot sauce
  • Ground pepper
  • Truffle salt
  • Directions:

Boil extra large or jumbo eggs for 20 minutes. Cool eggs in ice water and then drain. Crack and peel shells off of hard boiled eggs and rinse. Slice eggs lengthwise, remove yolk and place in a medium sized bowl. Add mayonnaise, mustard, vinegar, pepper and hot sauce. Next, mash eggs yolks with a fork until you have your desired texture. Scoop egg mixture into your prepared egg white halves until all of your mixture is gone. Sprinkle with truffle salt. If you want added color, you can garnish the eggs with some fresh chopped dill.

    “Stake” Bites

The Pioneer Woman has an easy recipe for steak bites, or we as we think every True Blood party should serve, "stake" bites. The vampires may not like them, but the humans and werewolves at your party sure will!

    "Stake" Bites

  • 1 pound Sirloin Steak (without Much Gristle) Or Pre-cut Beef Tips
  • Kosher Salt To Taste
  • Fresh Ground Black Pepper To Taste
  • 2 Tablespoons Butter
  • Directions:

Trim off the large obvious piece of fat that runs along the side of the meat. Next, cut strips less than 1-inch wide. Rotate the meat and cut into small bite-sized pieces. If you see any more large chunks of fat, gristle or long silvery membrane, cut them off. Sprinkle generously with kosher salt and freshly ground pepper. Toss the meat around a bit to thoroughly coat with the seasonings. Continue recipe...
