Sidecar
Despite the fact that it is currently 80 degrees outside in the middle of February it is still winter; just not quite the same winter that people on the East Coast are having. I’ve put together some chilled cocktails that will cool you down after getting home from work, are great for a any party and manage to take only ten minutes (except for the Vodka Slushy, but that one is definitely worth it) to make. Cheers to that California sunshine in the dead of winter!
1. Vodka slushies (Red Rooster): This one takes a bit longer to make, but, my god, you will die as soon as you try it. Be careful when drinking/eating this one…. it’s dangerous.
Ingredients: To make: Combine all of the ingredients in a large plastic container. Freeze for several hours. It will not freeze solid, but rather achieve the consistency of a slushy. Scoop into punch cups or wine glasses and serve. Serves a lot of people
To make: Pour the vodka and coffee liqueur over ice cubes in an old-fashioned glass. Gently top with the cream. Garnish with a sprinkle of nutmeg. Serves 1.
3. The Sidecar: This drink is refreshing after a long day at the office and will lift your spirits in no time! Ingredients:
To make: Pour the juice of 1 lemon into a small dish. Pour the sugar into another. Dip the edge of each glass into first the lemon, then the sugar. Set the glasses aside while you make the drinks. Mix together the cognac, lemon juice and Grand Marnier together in a 2-cup measuring cup. Fill a cocktail shaker ¾ full with ice, add the cocktail mix and shake for 30 seconds. Add some ice to the sugar-rimmed glasses and pour the cocktails. Garnish with cherries. Serves 2
4. Frozen Hot Chocolate:- This is a modern twist on a classic hot drink. It’s the same recipe Serendipity 3 in NYC uses, which means it’ll the best hot chocolate that has ever touched your tongue.
Ingredients: 6 pieces (1/2-ounce) chocolate , a variety of your favorites
To Make: Chop the chocolate into small pieces. Place it in the top of a double boiler over simmering water. Stir occasionally until melted. Add the hot chocolate mix and sugar. Stir until completely melted. Remove from heat and slowly add ½ cup of milk until smooth. Cool to room temperature. In a blender, place the remaining cup of milk, the room temperature chocolate mixture and the ice. Blend on high speed until smooth and the consistency of a frozen daiquiri. Pour into a giant goblet and top with whipped cream and chocolate shavings.

5. Winter Grapefruit Cocktail: A delightful concoction with a bittersweet taste just like our mood about this sunshine in January (bitter because we wish it was cold, but sweet because who actually wants to deal with shoveling snow?)
Ingredients: 1 1/2 oz light rum
To make: Add all ingredients to a shaker full of ice. Shake and strain into a cocktail glass. Garnish with a grapefruit twist.
