En Sushi - Happy Hour
Dear Love,
I am SO excited to be in 2012. I am truly, madly, deeply thrilled about a fresh start and the potential of meeting many new goals this year. I have a happy, buzzing feeling that is ballet dancing up into my thoughts and down into my guts. I thought this excitement deserved a drink!
The first happy hour of the new year was in honor of my friend Brooke's 27th birthday. I had missed her party the week before and wanted to make it up to her the best way I knew how...at a happy hour!
I asked her what she was in the mood for and in what part of town she'd like to go. She told me Sushi in Los Feliz. My first thought was, "Uh oh, challenge." It turns out there was a great Sushi happy hour in Los Feliz, which I was able to track down. En Sushi on Hillhurst serves their happy hour menu from 4 to 7 Monday through Friday with deals on Beer, Wine, Sake, Cocktails and Well Drinks, and of course a great variety of hand rolls and other dishes like calamari and chicken gyoza.
I originally had wanted the Peach Martini, but they were out of peaches. It's good to know the juice is fresh, for next time. Instead, I got the Lychee Martini. I never can remember what lychee tastes like so I ask our server. She explains that it's like a pear. Right. Sounds like the next best thing. After a few sips I can't fake it and admit that the lychee is not doing it for me. I won't forget this time. It wasn't the fault of the bartender, the drink was made properly, I just don't like lychee! Got it?
I let Brooke take the lead with the food ordering. She ordered the Spicy Tuna Roll, Crunchy Shrimp Roll and Calamari. I completed the order with the Albacore Jalepeno Roll and Chicken Gyoza. I very much enjoyed the Gyoza. The shell was golden brown and crispy, cracking open with each bite letting the moist-slightly-spicy chicken spill onto my tongue. Delicious. You can't eat just one, that's a true story.
The Albacore Jalepeno Roll, was good, but didn't blow my mind. I wish'd the fish had more flavor. The Jalepeno was the only thing I could taste and it would have been nice to have a hint of something else with it, to offset it's aggressive power. When not a bite was left, Brooke asked what they had for dessert. She was hoping for her favorite, Tempura Fried Green Tea Ice Cream. Lucky girl, her food wish was granted. Happy Birthday, again!
I would absolutely return to this happy hour when I'm in the mood for Japanese! The prices were great, the menu was sufficient and I'm still thinking about the Gyoza.
Cheers and Happy New Year!
