Dine LA is dangerously close (January 19 - February 1, 2015), so if you haven't starting planning your meal deals throughout Los Angeles, then it's time to get to it. Dinner prices range from $30 - $50, and your L.A. options are certainly plentiful. Whether you're in the mood for American, Italian, Sushi, Thai or Tapas, most likely one of your favorite local joints will appear on the Dine LA list.
As much as I usually love Dine LA options, sometimes the menus I've tasted in the past haven't managed to highlight the restaurant's culinary pulse. Also, picking a random spot can be a risk, but luckily, most of the Dine LA menu's are now available for viewing online. Hence, when I discover a Dine LA menu I'm giddy about, I feel obligated to share it with my foodie community.
The Shades of Winter Salad was hearty and satisfying (parsnip and cashew puree, cauliflower couscous, radish, goat cheese). Not your typical salad and thank goodness. The Beef Carpaccio had a creative presentation of arancini, bone marrow vinaigrette, crispy pulled beef and horseradish. I devoured this dish. For a lighter starter, opt for Acabar's delectable Kanpachi Crudo made of Amberjack, shaved pears, olive dust, a plum vinaigrette and salmon roe - a sexy explosion of harmonious flavors.
The entrees are what sealed the Dine LA deal for me. I was really impressed with each of the three options. Sweet Potato Gnocchi was subtly sweet and well paired with a decorative and earthy hen of the woods mushroom and brown butter sauce. The Seared Scallops were perfectly seared and matched up with roasted, candied chestnuts and silky celery root - a great juxtaposition of textures. Braised Short Rib with smoked oyster cream, roasted sunchoke and spigarello is a must have course as well. Savory, tender and rich are the trio of adjectives that sum up the Braised Short Rib experience my mouth marveled last night. It's basically my new edible BFF.
Parsnip for dessert? Yup, and it was delicious. Who knew a root vegetable could make for a fabulous final bite? The Coconut Coulant, detailed with mostly coconut components (coconut custard, coconut powder, coconut foam, mango compote), was actually very subtle with the coconut flavor. The coconut dish was my third favorite of the three, but still very good. If and if you are expecting a standard s'mores serving, then think again. Three words: Marshmallow ice cream. Just trust me on this one - Gimme S'more is very suitable name.
The evening concluded with a surprise Fois Gras macaroon. Holy Duck! Not sure if the macaroon du jour will be available when you show up, but there's no harm in asking. Acabar's Dine LA menu is one you won't want to miss this month. My suggestion for Acabar's Dine LA menu? Get at least three of you for your dinner reservation and invite the sharing kind.
