The Fat Dog, Happy Hour - West Hollywood

While walking to the Faifax/Melrose flea market the other day, I passed a new bar called, The Fat Dog. The name and outdoor patio intrigued me, so I walked up to the hostess and checked if they offered a happy hour. I was in luck. She handed me the happy hour menu and I promised to return on a day that I wasn’t on a mission to shop til’ I dropped.

I returned to The Fat Dog last week on a beautiful summer day to enjoy a cold draft beer and a couple of happy hour appetizers. Our server was super friendly and alerted us that happy had thirty minutes of life left, so I ordered a $3 Anchor Steam and my boyfriend tried a $3 Fox Barrel Cider, that tasted like pressed pears. I was excited to see both beers accompanied by a chilled glass. Before we had a chance to decide on food, the server brought out a small ramekin of raw almonds tossed lightly in olive oil, fresh rosemary and some spicy pepper flakes.

 Beer always makes me hungry, so we decided on two starters, the $5 Crispy Rock Shrimp and the  $4 Mini Cheeseburger. The shrimp were still warm and coated with a creamy miso sauce, black sesame seeds and scallions – a winner for me. The burger was served with hot French Fries and a toasted bun. In our opinion, the bun over toasted, but the burger itself retained that great grill flavor.

Our 2nd round of beers had nearly finished when my boyfriend recognized a bottle of Delirium Tremens on the menu. Determined to impress me, a 720ml blue bottle of beer and glass with pink elephants arrived moments later. The beer was Belgium and delicious! Let me clarify, Delirium Tremens is not on the happy hour menu, but it is well worth the splurge. All in all, I liked the neighborhood feel, beer selection and wonderful service we received at The Fat Dog. Happy hour is Monday – Friday, 4pm to 7pm. Check it out.
