The Abbey - Happy Hour
Dear Love,
The last time I went to The Abbey was for my friend Michael’s 24th birthday party. That was four years ago! I still haven’t found a Mojito anywhere else quite as good. I remember everything about The Abbey being good; the food, the drinks, and the men; though not all straight, they were all good looking. Why hadn’t I been back? I even live in the neighborhood! Something told me that I should make a return, but for happy hour this time.
Samantha and I had a full friday evening planned, happy hour and then a screening of the new Jennifer Westfeldt film, Friends with Kids at the DGA. “We’re going to The Abbey,” I told her. She had never been before, and I had been waiting four years for a reunion.
We took an open table for two on the patio. We had good things to celebrate so were both happy to see champagne and mimosas specifically featured on the happy hour menu. Sam ordered the pure stuff, I got a mimosa.
The featured food items were all Mexican inspired, that was fine by me! The nachos and quesadilla immediately jumped off the page and into our mouths. The drinks came first. To start the evening with bubbles was just what we needed.
While in the middle of telling Sam one of my recent dating complications, the quesadilla and nachos arrived. Excited by the food and flustered from my story, my mimosa went down. I wasn’t even half-way through with it and it spilled all over the table and managed to slightly soak one end of the quesadilla plate. I am such a spiller. When our server came back I explained my accident to him. Another soon replaced it.
The nachos and quesadilla were amazing. I knew they would be. Samantha was impressed. The nachos were simple with black beans, cheese and salsa, but so very tasty. The quesadilla came with spicy sour cream; an ideal dip and bite combination. We were full of cheese and spice, but needed dessert to complete the meal. Have you seen the dessert case at The Abbey? Damn. We didn’t leave without making an attempt to eat a decadently-rich, red velvet cupcake.
When the check came, I was a little disappointed that I was charged for two mimosas...even though most of one was under my feet. Maybe not the best customer service? If I had been a man would the outcome have been different? Just things I thought about it. One charged, spilled, mimosa isn’t enough to keep me from going back though. The food really is delicious! Hopefully it doesn’t take me another four years...
XX,
