Saddle Ranch on Sunset - Happy Hour by Maren Swanson May 28th, 2013
Dear Love,
I often forget to check out Sunset Boulevard happy hours because I'm cheap when it comes to paying the valet there (up to $20 at some places), but driving by the Saddle Ranch the other day changed my mind. A big sign read: Valet $3.50 - basically, happy hour valet. So with the lure of a cheap valet and happy hour, I decided to play "tourist" for a day at the Saddle Ranch.
You can't help but be drawn to Saddle Ranch for its Western flare, a little cheesy perhaps but it's all part of the fun. Mannequins dressed in faded leather, cracked wood panelling and bull rides create the atmosphere here. And if you like dining on Sunset without the Sunset prices, then stop in earlier in the evening for their happy hour Monday through Friday, 4pm - 6:30pm with half off appetizers and drinks.
My friend and I stopped in the other day for a quick drink and an appetizer and realized that the portions here are huge...and up-selling is huge, too. I started with their version of a skinny margarita. If you're gonna go big, might as well do it at happy hour, so I choose Patron. When my friend ordered a beer, the server suggested a take-home souvenier mug with a bigger pour and he accepted (quite the pushover). Lastly, we ordered the chicken tenders accompanied by a honey mustard dressing. P.S., there are a lot of FRIED options here.
Before our appetizer hit, a basket of complimentary biscuits and corn muffins hit the table served warm with butter and honey and were an appropriate snack for our southwestern setting. Our chicken tenders came out piping hot and crispy; a great bar food snack to nosh on while we people watched on The Sunset Strip. I noticed a combination appetizer platter (massive) at the table next to us, and I swear it fed their entire family. This was all really half- off?
The check arrived and everything was half-off, except for the beer with the souveneir glass (a hefty $12 total), but we did have great take-away. We definitely played it safe at the Saddle Ranch, but there are plenty of options for all types of naughty including big, colorful sweet drinks served in carafes with a dry ice smoke or keg-looking devices set up at some tables. Go big or go home - that's how they do it a Saddle Ranch. You won't find me on a crazy weekend night there, but you may catch me at the bar for a sports game or on the patio on a beautiful LA day.
XXOO,
Maren
