I have spent some long overdue time on Sunset recently. The walk from my place to the Boulevard is shorter than I thought, plus burning a few calories trekking uphill banks me some extra calories for my happy hour cocktails. Since Sunset was my destination the other day, I stumbled on an old-time favorite: Sunset Trocadero. The Sunset Trocadero has history. Built in the 1930s, starlets and producers gathered here for martinis and movie premiere parties. 'Oh, they fancy then.'
These days, instead of wearing a black-tie inspired ensemble, you can see locals (like me), tourists and regulars sporting flip-flops and sundresses at happy hour. However, keeping in tune with their original old school vibe, Sunset Trocadero caters their cocktail menu for the cool with a vast martini list including their Sunset Trocadero or the La Cienega with tequila, Grand Marnier, lime juice and a splash of sweet and sour. On my latest visit with my date, we sampled the La Cienega (basically a margarita served straight up) and the La Brea, which tasted like an adult chocolate milk. We were also excited to discover that the half off all drinks really applied to ALL drinks, even bottles of wine!
The patio at the Trocadero was packed with people that day so we were lucky to get the last remaining table outside. The restaurant was divided; bright on the outside with scattered noises from Sunset and dark on the inside, with trendy tunes, low tables and plush sofas. You can people watch or enjoy an intimate date – it’s up to you.
After drinking 7oz martinis, we were ready to move on to some grub, so we were pleased to choose from their long list of appetizers all half off, too. I love having my options at happy hour and tend to get frustrated when only a few dishes are offered. Beef Filet Mignon tips were a suggested menu item, so we ordered those and the Mac n’ Cheese. The Filet Mignon tips were tender, well marinated and cooked with earthy mushrooms. I would definitely order them again. The Mac n’ Cheese was served hot with a crispy crust and crunchy bacon bits, but once I went below the surface I missed the layers of cheese and rich gooeyness I was longing for. The last dish I tried was a single chicken enchilada (seemed a little random on the menu, perhaps) – traditional and tasty.
Lastly, I finished our evening with a classic Ketel One vodka martini – hello, half off! Our tryst with the Trocadero was over, but I took some “007” covert video to document our fun that night. I almost suggested that we slip over to the other side for some more drinks and hand holding, but trouble at the Trocadero would had been looming if I had enjoyed another martini.
Within walking distance and happy hour until 8pm every evening, Sunset Trocadero will definitely convince me to return. The service was also great – another plus. I hope in the near future that they play around with adding some cutting edge cocktails, but for now the Old Hollywood vibe still speaks to me.
